California is currently in a state of emergency. The reason is the Oroville dam, which shows very h3 erosion damages. Now an uncontrolled flood threatens and the police have told the people to leave their homes immediately and that it is not an exercise. Federal districts are already in a state of emergency, because it has been raining for days and meanwhile the dam comes to the limit of its loading capacity.
Meanwhile the situation at the Oroville reservoir is so dangerous, that Governor Jerry Brown has declared the state of emergency. The districts of Butte, Sutter and Yuba are affected and more than 188.000 inhabitants are told to evacuate from areas near Oroville Dam. Its very serious, said Brown, the situation is unclear and changes from minute to minute. If the damaged main spillway can no longer hold the out-flowing water, then a huge wave is to be expected, that will affect large parts of the region around the lake. Emergency shelters for the population have already been built.
It was tried to redirect the water to the main spillway, after a large hole had been closed last week. During this time the emergency spillway had to be used, but this spillway now threatens to collapse. The 235 m high and 2300 m long Oroville Dam is situated only 125 km away from California’s capital Sacramento, it dams Lake Oroville and is mainly used to generate electricity. Normally California is dominated by droughts, but in the last few days it has rained heavily and many people had to be rescued from their homes, as the San Lorenzo River runs over.
Three years ago, a drought emergency was declared, and the people had to cut down their water consumption. During five years, there wasn´t much rain in California, now the constant rain has caused a catastrophe.
